QAA is an independent organization in the United Kingdom responsible for external quality evaluation in higher education and for setting standards. Established in 1997, it monitors quality assurance processes in higher education institutions across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland and plays an important role in developing the national academic standards framework.
QAA’s core functions include external review of universities’ internal quality assurance systems (quality review), development of national qualifications frameworks and subject benchmark statements, and safeguarding student interests. Review processes are conducted through peer review with the participation of independent experts and student representatives. QAA also maintains the UK Quality Code for Higher Education.
QAA is active internationally and provides advisory and evaluation services in many countries. Its work supports the global reputation of the UK higher education system, the international recognition of qualifications, and the consistency of academic standards.
