Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders

: 2005

NVAO is a bi-national accreditation organization established in 2005 by the governments of the Netherlands and Belgium (the Flemish Community). It is responsible for external evaluation and accreditation of higher education programs in these two jurisdictions and applies the principle of institutional independence in decision-making.

NVAO’s core mandate is the programmatic accreditation of bachelor’s and master’s programs and the assessment of internal quality assurance systems of universities and universities of applied sciences. The process is conducted through peer review with the participation of independent experts and covers learning outcomes, curriculum quality, academic capacity, and continuous improvement mechanisms.

NVAO operates in accordance with the ESG standards of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), is a member of ENQA, and is listed in EQAR. Its accreditation decisions serve as the basis for degree-awarding authorization in the Netherlands and Flanders and support international recognition and academic mobility.
