Karl Leydecker is an experienced higher education leader and academic governance professional currently serving as Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the UK’s independent body responsible for maintaining and enhancing academic standards and quality across higher education institutions.
He has a long-standing career in university leadership, academic governance, and quality assurance, with extensive experience in senior roles across UK higher education institutions. His work focuses on institutional strategy, academic leadership, learning and teaching development, and external quality assurance systems.
Before joining QAA at executive level, he held senior leadership positions at several UK universities, including the University of Aberdeen, where he served as Senior Vice-Principal, and the University of Dundee, where he was Vice-Principal (Learning and Teaching). In these roles, he led major portfolios related to academic quality, teaching enhancement, institutional strategy, and governance structures.
His earlier academic leadership experience includes senior roles at the University of Kent, where he served as Dean of Humanities and Head of School of European Culture and Languages, contributing to curriculum development, academic standards, and faculty leadership.
At QAA, he plays a key role in shaping national and international quality assurance strategy, strengthening transnational education (TNE) frameworks, and supporting collaboration between the UK and global higher education systems. His current leadership work includes engagement with international partners and regulatory bodies to enhance trust, transparency, and comparability in higher education standards.
